Changes made in Final Project

Do. Observe. Refine!

Based on the reactions that I had observed during the final presentation, I realized that I was a bit out of focus on my project and turns out the message was failed to being convey. Therefore, I have decided to filter through all the things that I have done and give more focus on the final visual outcome and message.

Poster Design

Problems found:
1. Focusing on the sculpture making too much, lacking in communicating the message
2. The 5 situations that I wanted to depict by using my sculptures, content wise, it's neither 100% accurate nor even applies to real life situations (How can I inspire people when I can't even inspire myself)

New ideas are out and sketches will be out pretty soon! till then.

Visual Journal - No Where to be Found

Visual Journal Unable To Locate

This is the worst news of the semester after spending the entire semester to work on my journal, even if there are progress posted up here on this blog but the visual sketches that I produced are all gone. It might take quite some time to come out with another complete set of text and images, but I will do my best and within the time constraint to produce a summary of my final project.

Final Project

It's been a while now...

The final projects are finally over but there's not much time to rest as time is very limited and everyone is working hard in preparation for the graduation exhibition that is going to be held at the end of April. For now, I will post the final outcome of my final project here.

Interesting work

Sculpture Colouring - Reference Hunting

Currently sculpture is at a stage whereby I can start colouring them already, images have been taken and will be posting them up soon.

For now, check out this website

I like the way he paints his colour onto the sculpture, simple yet eye-catching. And the size of his sculptures are big, therefore leaving his enough space to carve out almost every single little details. Awesome work

Visual Experimentation Progress

After Critique Session

After the last critique session on the sketches for my sculptures, feedbacks that I received was:

1. Human Characters are being too normal and confined, in a way that I am just limiting my thoughts of a human character should look just like an average, normal looking human being

2. From a 2D sketches to a 3D sculptures, that is one challenge that I need to work them out

3. Time limitation, due to my lack of experiences and skills in clay sculpturing, improvement on the visual outcome can be done but not within a short amount of time, therefore at the moment, I am still exploring methods to produce my sculptures in the best outcome possible.

So I went online and check for interesting sculptures design and this is what I have stumbled upon.

Salao Coboi referred his characters to creatures, but the interesting part is that he got his inspirations from high end fashion images or catwalks.

Personal thoughts:
I think that the reason he did in characters in such a way is because perhaps he does not go along to the method of perception that fashion designers perceive their models should be like, like the usual cutting edge kind of look, therefore he came out with a grotesque, creature kind of appearance to grab audience's attentions. Maybe this is the emotional thoughts that he wants people to "feel" from his works.

Reflecting back to my feedbacks, I think in my character making, this is what I am lacking of. From the idea/ concept that I came up with, I should do my characters in a way that not just the colour mood that gives people the emotion, but through my character designs, people can feel the emotion of the personality that will be portray in my 5 sculptures.

Busy Holiday

Have yet to update for quite some time now...

It's been a while since the last update, this is due to the pain of having holiday at the peak moment of our semester haha, no doubt things still had to keep moving forward. Another reason why it took quite some time to update is because I had certain issues with my visual experimentation, and I am still working on it, will post the images up soon.

I do think that Marta Dlugolecka is quite an inspiring artist for myself as she also does clays for her illustration works (I seriously did not think that people nowadays still uses clays as part of an illustration piece, my bad :{ ), and I really do love her choice of colour moods and art style. Kept me motivated all day long!

Inspirations for the Execution(Outlook of it)

Great Design from Intro, Julian House

Note that "Intro" is the name of the studio, "Julian House" is their creative partner.

This was Intro's biggest album campaign and was initially approached to art direct the album cover, after seeing the work of Creative Partner, Julian House, they asked him to direct the whole campaign.

According to Intro, Julian House, the key ingredient to this highly creative distinctive campaign was the large amount freedom that were given by the band to develop the concept and execute the visuals. Their attitude was very much "That's what you do, go and do it."

(Ernest) First of all, I do think that in the design, most of the emotions are being expressed through images and collages, rather than text. Secondly, the way they play with the text really associate well with the visuals, especially the essence and emotions that they portrayed. Thirdly, the key words that the band talk about this album - 'colossal,' 'rockin,' and 'we're not gonna go bored' were nicely down and can be seen and felt in their album cover. I think as any creative professionals, this is an essential part to achieve.

Below are the promotional materials for the release of the album(first image) and card design for their world tour promotions (second image).

Window Display Illustrations

Check this out!

The music sync well with the visuals!

3D Illustrations - Window Display Design?

Window Display Design

Other than making sculptures, I found that window display design could actually be a part of 3 Dimentional  Illustrations.

Here (below) is from Studio XAG. They were commissioned to make & install a window display for Futuremap, an annual exhibition showcasing the best graduating artists and designers from the University of the Arts London.

They are done by paper cutting and transplanted into the window display by using the Futuremap logo to define the shape of the room. The colour bright turquoise was used to grab the viewer's attention.

Final Project (Thesis Project) Research -4

Collage Illustrator - Kate Slater

I would say that her works requires a lot of patients and papers, but they are all incredibly beautiful and really colourful. Not much of big or fancy concepts behind, but great executions.

Her children illustration book titled 'ABC London' reminds me of my children illustration ABC animal book.

(Thinking Process) I think that collage might be helpful in my installation works as well, if I were to portray or voice out a social problem, might consider graffiti art too.

Final Project (Thesis Project) Research -3

Feeling it!

The artist, Chris Sickels and his studio called "Red Nose Studio" is pretty wide known as well. Most pc users must have seen his work but perhaps just didn't really realize that. A great source of inspiration for my sculpting work!
